Emergency Preparedness Resources

  • “Don’t wait until the next emergency to get ready; start today. A list of family planning activities is available at www.readypa.org
  • “How will you pay your bills if disaster strikes? Disasters don’t plan ahead, but you can. Learn how at www.ready.gov/financial-preparedness
  • “Your neighbor may have to rely on you during an emergency. Will you be ready? Learn how at www.ready.gov/neighbors
  • “Do you know what to do when an emergency happens? Learn the five key actions you can take at www.ready.gov/untilhelparrives
  • “What important documents should you have in your emergency kit? The Emergency Financial First Aid Kit explains them all: https://go.usa.gov/xNhp6

Preparing a family emergency plan:

  1. Develop a “family emergency plan card” with important phone numbers and an alternate emergency contact person.
  2. Find the safe spots in your home for each type of potential disaster.
  3. Choose multiple meeting places and prioritize.
  4. Determine the best escape routes from your home by finding two ways out of each room.
  5. Practice! For any family emergency plan to be effective, it must be practiced regularly.
  6. Sign up for local emergency alerts and warnings and make sure you have access to sufficient cash during a disaster.

Additional emergency preparation practices:

  1. Download a group texting app so your family can keep in touch before, during, and after an emergency.
  2. Practice evacuating in the car with your animals so they’re more comfortable if you need to leave your home quickly.
  3. Review your insurance policy and disaster coverage before an emergency.
  4. Practice basic first aid skills, including CPR and how to control bleeding, care for shock, treat burns, and splint broken bones.
  5. Sign up for emergency alerts on your phone by downloading the FEMA mobile app at www.fema.gov/mobile-app
